Think before you click

  • Do not open email attachments from strangers and unknown sources. Opening spam or junk email – especially unknown attachments – risks a spyware infection that could cripple your computer, damage your files or steal your personal information.
  • Download responsibly. Make sure that you only download software from companies that you trust. File sharing services can be a source of infection, as can pirated software. There are an increasing number of spyware programs that masquerade as anti-spyware programs. If you have any doubts about the legitimacy of a program, avoid it.
  • When you get unwanted pop-ups or dialog boxes, close them by clicking on the X in the top corner, or by pressing Alt + F4 in Microsoft Windows. You do not have to click AGREE or CANCEL to close a window.
